Program Overview

Schools of Service is an entry point for any K–12 school to be designated a 9/11 Day School of Service just by participating in 9/11 Day or a Semester of Service. Every school that engages students in kindness, community-building, or service activities during the fall can receive official recognition.

There is no cost, no grant requirements, and no minimum number of activities.

Schools simply participate in a way that works for them and record their impact.

Timeline

  • Enrollment opens: September 2026
  • Complete activities through December 2026
  • Recognition provided on a rolling basis throughout fall 2026

Who Can Enroll

FAQ:

What types of activities qualify a school for recognition?

  • Schools can choose from a wide range of activities, including kindness lessons, schoolwide service projects, donation drives, student-led initiatives, or participation in 9/11 Day programming.
  • Any activity that promotes empathy, kindness, or community engagement qualifies.

Is there a minimum number of activities required?

  • No. Schools should participate in ways that align with their capacity and goals. Activities may be small or large scale.

Does this program cost anything?

  • No. Enrollment, recognition materials, and resources are all provided at no cost.

Can our entire school participate, or only certain grades?

  • Any level of engagement qualifies. Schools may involve all grades or just a single classroom or club.

Will our school be publicly recognized?

  • Yes. Schools may be highlighted on 911day.org and on Remember the Good social channels unless they request not to be listed.

Can Schools of Service count toward district service-learning requirements?

  • Yes. Many districts accept these activities toward their civic engagement or SEL requirements. Schools may document participation as needed.

Are grants available for Schools of Service?

  • Not at this time. This is a recognition-only program. Future sponsorship may introduce school-based mini-grants.

How will we receive our materials?

  • All materials are provided digitally after enrollment, including certificates, badges, and promotional assets.

Can schools participate in additional programs as well?

  • Yes. Schools may also register classrooms or support Student Service Captains. Participation in any component strengthens the school’s School of Service designation.
